i cant stop thinking about nwp logistics. when the survivors woke up from it what was it like. was it like when youre in a dream and it feels so real then you wake up and the reality of it is gone. do the memories feel like real life. and for the people that died during the simulation what happened to them while it was still ongoing...... were they something like ghosts like in among us just spectating? were they still in the code but just not in any way conscious, was it more like dreamless sleep or like a vague confusing and jumbled fever dream, when they got up did they have to be told the events of the simulation that they missed or did they just somehow... know? despite not exactly consciously witnessing it? and then waking them up...... we got 2.5 with komaeda but what about the others????? was it really easy for some and more difficult for others, and how fast did any of them wake up..... what were their 'worlds' like and what happened to wake them up. world destroyer took a violent route with komaedas but maybe depending on the person it didnt have to be violent?

This is a bigger problem in the fanfic realm as well, because I have recently frequently been running into the problem of being drawn in by shippy fanfics that involve things like captivity, enslavement, and other scenarios that inherently constitute reduced autonomy and thus dubious (at best) consent, but actively refuse to engage with those implications.

And it's frustrating, because these are scenarios that I find compelling, and that have the potential for very rich emotional work. I like the juxtaposition of physical pleasure or emotional fulfillment with feelings of fear and violation, and the shame and self-blame that those feelings bring about. And I like digging into an experience of love and desire that is frighteningly selfish in its negligence towards the personhood of its object.

But I see so many of these fics that are explicitly framed as seeking to avoid these story elements - they'll have an author's note or something at the beginning with something like "I know this is problematic, but I've tried to mitigate the dubcon elements as much as I can!" And I find this... deeply frustrating! Because it's seeking to ameliorate the very dynamics that make this sort of story interesting to me!

And by the refusal to engage with the inherently nonconsensual aspects of these premises, I'm not necessarily referring to fantasy romance plot scenarios in which the characters overcome the violence of their initial dynamic to live happily ever after in a more egalitarian relationship. I can understand that these plots are living inside a sort of non-diegetic BDSM fantasy bubble, and they are still engaging with and deriving their initial eroticism and intimacy from violence implicit in their premises, while using the fantasy aspect to mitigate the actual "realistic" consequences of that violence. (I read some danmei novels that did this in ways I found really enjoyable; I think Hannigram also arguably fits into this mold in certain ways, especially considering that it is a fantasy about the parts of abuse that can feel intensely thrilling and that can make you feel recognized and known in ways no one else can.) What I'm referring to is, well, a refusal to engage at all with that violence and violation; an implementation of these premises that feels like just another pretext for introducing the characters and getting them into a relationship, without attentiveness to the implications of the specific pretext in play.

And there's something worth probing at with these kinds of authors' notes in the sense that... there's a lot of concern in fandom nowadays about "romanticizing" rape and abuse, and the seeming necessity of portraying perfect negotiation and consent in fanfic. And yet these sorts of paratextual framings seem to me to be dangerously mistaken about what consent even is - to be conceiving of it as a magic script with no interpersonal or situational antecedents, one that intrinsically smooths over systemic power differentials or lack of personal trust.

I wonder also if that's actually related to the simplistic approach to textual criticism that I sometimes call "checklist criticism" - the idea that a text can be deemed harmful or not, problematic or not, -ist or not, simply by going through a list of "is x present? check yes or no" bullet points, rather than taking a more holistic approach to the relationship between textual production and broader systems of power, being attentive to the specific premises and genre/stylistic aims of a text, etc. Possibly that's too much of a reach for what is ultimately a complaint about the difficulty of finding really juicy darkfic, but it's worth considering.

Penelope was pretty sure her betrothed, Lord Debling, had been replaced by what is her best guess some sort of demon.

The witch first became suspicious when the imposter brought her a book instead of another plant. Debling always brings her a plant. One that is often replanted in a certian part of the garden so Penelope does not forget about it, despite those plants not being very useful for spells or potions. This book the imposter gave, though, Penelope found herself at a loss for words. The next gift was a new inkwell made of a precious gem that sparkled in the light. It was gorgeous and possibly the most beloved gift Penelope has ever received.

Well, the imposter certainly gave better gifts than her betrothed.

Her next suspicion arose when the imposter twirled Penelope in the rain. The imposter had snuck up on Penelope when she was feeling a bit giddy, splashing and dancing through the puddles in the square. The imposter fell into perfect step in her dance. There, they found themselves laughing like school children. Penelope also noticed that for one reason or another, the imposter was having some trouble holding his form. Brief flashes of brown curls instead of slicked blonde, green eyes that glowed like emeralds, instead of plain blue. Debling would have never danced with her like this.

Penelope asked the imposter for a kiss. By this point, she felt she could call the imposter her friend, and maybe at least once she'll know a kiss of someone who sees her more than a convenience to his responsibilities. The imposter clung to her during their kiss and it felt glorious.

By the time they were two weeks away from the wedding the imposter got acting like Lord Debling down to perfection when they were around others. Penelope doesn't like it. Lord Debling was always indifferent to her, she was a solution to his problem of needing someone to run his estate while he chased after his work. At times, it felt like the imposter knew more about Penelope than her old betrothed did. The imposter certainly picked up on Penelope's emotions better. Always subtley changing the act to make Penelope smile.

When they were alone though, on the rare occasion the imposter seemed to refuse to not being in constant skin contact with Penelope. From hand holding, to kissing, to that one carriage ride where Penelope found her betrothed ravishing her chest. It was like a flood gate opened after the imposter got a taste of Penelope with that first kiss. Penelope found herself participating more eagerly with each new experience. But she always stopped before the imposter could get under her skirts.

There was one thing the imposter always had trouble hiding. He had a bigger appetite than Lord Debling ever did. He also wasn't as picky as Lord Debling, whose vegetarian diet always made him weary of what was being served to him. Actually, the imposter always seemed displeased when they couldn't eat all the options available.

Portia seemed to catch on and when the imposter came to call she made sure there was only had vegetarian options available.

"You must keep your betrothed happy, Penelope," the older witch said. "You will be rewarded with security."

Felicity also didn't like that the imposter could pull off a perfect imitation of Debling. Nor was she afraid to voice these thoughts out loud. "You should go back to how you were a couple of weeks ago. It made my sister happier."

The imposter chuckeled. "I'll keep that in mind."

When Penelope married the imposter, she was carried away to a home in Bloomsbury. The imposter swiftly pulled Penelope in for a kiss and laying her on the bed. One hand firmly planted on Penelope's breasts while the other explored the rest of her body. She could feel that hand pulling up her skirts.

Penelope pushed the imposter away. Cheeks flushed, and chest heaving for air. "You can drop the disguise. I rather see you."

The imposter blinked before laughing. Running a hand through Penelope's hair, and kissing her forehead. "Oh Penelope, my clever witch."

The form of Lord Debling melted away into a beautiful woman, too beautiful to be human. Brown curls fell down her back, with green glowing eyes, a coy smile on her face. A pair of rams horns curl around the sides of her head. She had nails that looked to be as sharp as knives. She's taller than Penelope's former betrothed, damn. Now Penelope is gonna have to learn some levitation or flying spells just to kiss her wife. Well, at least she was right about the imposter being a demon.

Penelope's magical energy brushed against her wife. She felt hunger, one that food would not satisfy.

"You're a succubus," Penelope said, eyes wide. She wasn't scared. If her wife truly wanted to, she could have sucked out Penelope's energy long before now. There were plenty of opportunities to do it before the wedding.

♡ he thinks distraction works the best, rather than trying to jump and overcome the hurdle, he ignores it and always comes crumbling down sooner than later

♡ pretty early in the relationship is when you witness his first mental breakdown, waking up in the middle of the night to an empty and cold space beside you in your shared bed in his apartment, your momentary confusion quickly turning to worry and concern when you hear a quiet, wet sniffle and some heavy breaths coming from the end of the bed, causing you to sit up and reach an arm over to the bedside table, turning on the dimmed lightbulb in the small lamp and setting eyes on a slightly hunched over figure sitting on the foot of the bed, their back facing you and long brown hair covering the sides of their face

୨୧ bård knows he’s been caught when you softly call his name, your voice buttery smooth with concern and love as you ask him if he’s okay, an answer you already know the answer to, really… and bård doesn’t answer, he just keeps his eyes staring down at the floor, watching as small teardrops hit against the floor, reflecting his own image back to him as he scrunches his nose slightly in dismay at the sight of himself

♡ the lack of an answer only causes you to sigh softly before crawling down to him and ringing your hands around his waist, resting your chin atop his shoulder which is covered by an old black sweater, leaning your head closer to him as to press a butterfly kiss against his wet cheek, whispering to him, asking him ever so lovingly if there’s anything you can do, if he’s upset about anything in particular

୨୧ bård leans back into you slightly before letting out a shaky breath, talking so quietly whilst still keeping his eyes on the floor of your shared bedroom… the feeling of your arms around him, holding him, it just makes him feel so safe… so able to open up and nearly all of the fears of being judged or misunderstood vanish as you cradle him from behind, yet his words are still slightly cautious and almost dismissive to his own pain, his own feelings

“ nothing… just one of those nights, you know? don’t feel good… it’s so fucking stupid… i’m sorry, for waking you up, just go back to sleep, baby… " ( you can hear the cracking in his voice as he dismisses just how bad he’s feeling tonight, just how flooded his head has become with thoughts of self hatred and a general dislike for life itself )

♡ you don’t just leave him be and go back to sleep though, this only makes you tighten your arms around him and pepper more kisses to his wet cheek, mumbling to him about how it isn’t stupid, he isn’t stupid and how you won’t sleep until you know he’s sleeping peacefully too!

୨୧ hearing all of this just makes him begin crying even more, letting you wipe his cheeks with your fingers as you whisper comforting words towards him, letting you take his shaky hand in yours and pull him back up to the head of the bed, letting you guide him to lay down next to you and immediately resting his head atop your chest as your hand comes down to brush through his messy brown hair, his watery eyes staring off to the side and his nose still running slightly as he sniffles every few seconds

♡ you hold him for the entire night, pressing loving kisses to his head every so often just as he lets out short sentences every so often, opening himself up more and more through the night in small broken up pieces, his voice soon becoming drowsy, slurred with sleep and exhaustion in the early hours of the morning and eventually, the only noise coming from him is no longer sniffles and words full of sadness! just soft breaths leaving his mouth as he sleeps, quiet snores joining soon after

୨୧ and you stay true to your word, falling asleep only when you know he has all he needs out of his system for the night and is sleeping with a clear mind, a mind with no haze of hatred, pressing one last kiss to his head and slipping your hand under his sweater to stroke his back before you let yourself fall asleep, both of you holding onto each other tightly even in sleep

♡ though in the morning, bård does try to revert back to his old ways, acting as if nothing happened, as if there was no mental breakdown to speak of and you should just forget you ever saw anything and you know it’s out of embarrassment, out of shame and lingering fear… you’re so quick to shut it down, telling him in the most gentle way possible that he cannot live like that, he needs to talk about his feelings with you, telling him to do it for you at least because you cannot stand to see him so pent up and so obviously upset

୨୧ and he will, for your sake… and to better himself for you… it takes time, of course! faust is so used to keeping his thoughts bottled up and never saying them aloud, so used to simply crying through the night and punishing himself… but he gets there, with you, he gets there… slowly but surely!

♡ physical comfort and verbal comfort is the best for bård, nothing makes him feel safer, more accepted and loved than being held in your arms… he will never deny that, he could never even try to deny that! obviously, he might get a little shy and standoffish if anyone ever sees the two of you cuddling and sees you comforting him but that’s just an error of the times, it would take him a very long time to ever lose that shyness about being seen receiving comfort

୨୧ bård is always extremely sleepy and exhausted after heaving a mental breakdown or even simply having a deep, open cut conversation with you about some thoughts he’s been having! it just tires him out talking about all that goes on inside his head, opening himself up so much after being so used to keeping it all to himself exhausts him and he will need a good sleep afterwards and a good sleep for him means cuddling up with you, feeling your warmth against him, feeling your hands stroking his face and whispering to him about how much you love him, feeling your legs tangled with his under the blankets of your shared bed and hearing your heartbeat steadily thumping against your chest

♡ i feel like bård has some pretty bad anxiety at times too, social anxiety, he just doesn’t really love being around too many people! so whenever there’s more people than usual in helvete, getting drunk and raising hell in the basement of the store, you always watch as he slouches down slightly and purposely moves his long hair to cover his face more, beginning to tap his foot against the wooden floor, bouncing his knee and repeatedly wiping his now sweaty hands on his pants, bringing a hand up to fiddle with his pentagram necklace as his eyes dart around nervously

୨୧ obviously, you do not just let him sit there and do this, you place your drink down somewhere and approach him, leaning down slightly to gently grab his hand and gesture towards the open door of the loud record store! bård is always quick to grip your hand tighter and leave the store with you, taking deep breaths as soon as you guys get outside, leaning back against the glass window whilst you stroke his upper arm, trying not to draw unwanted attention to the two of you as some people pass by to enter the store

♡ once bård has caught his breath and his body has relaxed from the previously tense state it was in, he usually just wants to go home with you! quietly mumbling that he has a bit of a headache but if you want to stay, it’s okay…

“ i think i’ll go back to the apartment… my head hurts, i’m sorry… you can stay here though, if you want! " ( bård still has a little trouble looking at you after you witness him having difficulties, always keeping his eyes trained on the ground and his fingers pulling at tiny loose threads of his venom shirt )

୨୧ you never stay though, why would you? telling him so softly that you would never want to stay somewhere so loud and hectic when you could be at home with him, watching some obscure horror movie you’ve never even heard of from his vhs collection, cuddling in bed and loving up on each other! this always makes faust bring his eyes up to meet yours and flash you a soft smile, his eyes gleaming with appreciation as you hold your hand out for him to take which he gladly does, holding your hand tightly in his as you walk back to your shared apartment together

♡ all of this isn’t to say that he doesn’t struggle with other pent up feelings too though!

୨୧ another deep struggle bård has is immense anger, he has so much pent up and always tries to find ways to relieve himself of it, to get it out of his system! something that never really proved useful before he met you… being in a relationship with you, being loved by you and loving you rids him of so much anger, so many violent thoughts… and the few times they come back to him? rough sex with you is always guaranteed to help him, just as soft sex helps him when he feels a little down!

♡ bård really just needs love sometimes, he needs to know that you’re there for him, needs to know that you love him and so do so many of his friends… he so desperately needs reassurance… and thankfully, you’re always there to give it to him <3

the reversed king of pentacles with a taurus sun AND leo moon tells me he is quite rigid and stubborn when it comes to his beliefs, values and how he approaches life. this can also mean that he's a workaholic and sometimes will sacrifice himself for the betterment of the people around him. i get the vision that he might be someone who's highly depended on (likely financially) whether that'd be with his family, friends, etc. and that his injury 6 years ago made him feel unsure of how his career will go. he places a large importance on his career, as it gives him the ability to provide for those around him which could attribute to why he is so stubborn and work-oriented. the 3 of cups tell me that he places a large importance on others' happiness rather than himself, he finds it fulfilling to see others' happiness and loves celebrating and could even enjoy parties as well as being social with others. he approaches life with a glass-half-full attitude and is often smiley when surrounded by others, as he seems to enjoy collaborating and exchanging stories with others. the 2 of swords can describe someone who is indecisive and takes a long time when making a decision, which i think is influenced by his stubbornness. he likes weighing out all the options before making a decision, and he cannot be rushed. another interpretation could also be that he is a great mediator and very diplomatic, as he values balance and listening to different perspectives. if a disagreement or fight breaks out, you can bet that he's probably in between them trying to diffuse it or even encouraging communication so the problem can be solved. riccardo tries to be impartial and does a very good job separating the emotional and logical side of himself. he seems to make his decisions based on facts and data rather than what feels right, and he's very calculated before making any moves. he's very authoritative and intelligent, as he's able to almost always see the bigger picture and not have it be deviated. he's likely looked to as a leader due to his knowledge and trust from his teammates as well as coaches (crazy to think so cause he's only 22). With the card on the bottom, this enforces the feeling of indecision he has and can portray him as a more passive character when it comes to certain things. he seems to be the type of person to not be content when it comes to staying in one place, it's as if he needs constant stimulation or challenges to fulfil his inner self.

i feel like the messages from the oracle just reiterate what's been said from the tarot so i apologise if some of it sounds like it's repeated. anyways, he looks like such a sagittarius to me so i wasn't surprised when this card came out. i feel that he could be a serial optimist and doesn't let any hardship consume him. he could be the type of person to always expect the best and not understand others who see life through a negative lens. he seeks constant growth to be able to challenge himself and transform into the best version of himself. he could enjoy travelling and experiencing different cultures, cuisines, environments, etc. i know that he speaks italian, english and spanish at the moment so i wouldn't be surprised if he has a knack for languages and picks up other languages from his surroundings. the scorpion card describes someone who is passionate and determined and places great importance on their career and those closest to them. interestingly, his taurus sun opposes this scorpion card, as taurus and scorpio are sister signs. I felt libra energy as well when shuffling for him, so i think he has a lot of duality within his personality. again the mediator card tells me that he really values equality and possesses good characteristics to be a leader. i honestly see him being one of arteta's most trusted players in the next couple of years, and even though he might not have the armband, he still acts as a leader amongst his peers. i keep seeing the image of him mediating arguments and calming others down when things start to get heated. i know people always talk about his aura and charisma, and arteta wasn't wrong because from these cards i truly feel like he has a bright future ahead of him if he continues to persist and challenge himself.

i agree completely, and everyone seems to see him as an easy target because he hasn’t ever really spoken up to defend himself, he’s only ever tried defending his girlfriend which hasn’t ever worked either. i think more often than not he’s been too sweet for his own good, but then again that kind hearted nature has always been the reason i empathized so much with him.

most of the press this season was a breath of fresh air, but yes specially the ones he did with drew and laci and the kitten interview with chase as well, he seemed very comfortable when with them. i’ve always thought he feels more at ease interacting with people one on one rather then in bigger groups.

sucks that people take that uneasiness and anxiety as arrogance or everyone hating him, unfortunately that tends to happen a lot with introverts.

i just hope he gets through this, the people sending him hate have likely already made up their mind about him and aren’t likely to give him any grace, they’re now saying that since the cast haven’t posted any goodbyes to him that means they’re glad he is gone, which is bullshit since they are silent on all fronts, not just regarding him.

yess i think with tiktok and such, there's this new idea people have that if people don't speak out about every detail on their lives, then they're hiding something. because he doesn't come out right and defend himself (because he's rising above it and being the bigger person) they treat him like he's a problem and is hiding something or keeping something. it's so weird.

and i totally agree!! he's so gentle-hearted. you just have to watch him to pick up on that. i really don't think there's a mean bone in his body. the way he speaks on things...there's such a gentleness to him that was what drew me to him from the start. it's rare to see that i think.

the kitten interview, the texting fans, and the fishing for complements one were sooo refreshing. he was just in his element and there wasn't any drama. not to be shady, but no one making faces or rolling their eyes or whatever. he could just be there and be himself and not have to overthink and be too into his own head. and i always talk about how soft chase is with him, but i love seeing his interactions with laci and drew and austin.

yeah the people that are actively rooting for a falling out between them need to touch grass. they are acting like these people are characters not human beings and this is drama to consume with popcorn, not people's real emotions and friendships. i don't understand it. hell, i even want him to madison to still be friends simply because i want this little family they formed all those years ago to still be in each other's corner. i can't imagine wishing for downfalls of friendships just for content and drama to eat up. it's so bizarre to me. like i'd totally read a book or watch a show that had a plot line like some of this drama but the fact is these are real human beings, not works of fiction, and these are their real hearts and emotions that are getting hurt in the process and people need to realize that.

also can i just say how much i love having found the obx community here on tumblr. like y'all are seriously the best!! i love reading everyone's takes and how supportive and kind and the grace that extends from you all. it's just really nice to see that among the world of twitter and tiktok where things are so very much the opposite

Full disclosure every time I look at the KumoDesu Fandom I see a lot of takes I disagree with strongly (Reddit what did I expect really)… BUT hating on opinions you disagree with is super wrong instead you should spread opinions you love! So yknow what let me post some of my KumoDesu Opinions unprompted.

Here’s one my biggest HC: Why I see the Demon Army as Family:

I will die on the hill of Shiro and Ariel as the parents to Mera (Oldest), Kyouya (middle child), and Sophia (youngest). But here's sort of why I see the coding that way.

Not gonna be defending/explaining why I ship Shiro x Ariel, it’s obvious.

Shiro and Ariel give the most advice and guidance to the three of them (they quite LITERALLY raised Sophia). Ariel giving the talks working through emotions and Shiro being the more action based parent. They also quite literally are responsible for sorting out all their housing, schooling, and helping with employment.

Mera gives the vibe of the sibling with a bigger age gap than the other two, thus why he takes a less sibling bickering and more sibling guidance role (he also has the self esteem issues of an eldest child ngl). I wouldn’t say he ever takes a parental role so much because he feels more on Sophia and Kyouya’s level as opposed to Ariel and Shiro’s. Mera says word for word that helping Kyouya feels like having a younger brother as well. And since Sophia was originally his responsibility to look after but after Shiro and Ariel join them they mostly take over it gives the feeling of “orphan who expects they have to parent their much younger sibling only to be adopted and now only have it when they’re parents are at work”.

Sophia’s thing with Mera is mostly due to the envy skill. I think her real feelings are deep proactive feelings due to having no one close to her in her past life and the fact that after knowing the truth (and seeing all her flaws) he’s still determined to stick by her side. She’s literally never had that ever, not even a lesser more fair weather version of that. I will also say Ariel, Shiro, and Kyouya fall more into a “do rather than say” kind of love language so Mera being very verbal about his commitment probably floors her. I don’t think she actually wants to date him, I would put it more into “child mistakes familiar affection for romantic and say they want to marry their sibling/parent when young but grows out of it” (yknow what Shun was PRAYING was going on with Sue). I do think Sophia strongly gives the vibe of “overprotective sibling who with “test” all her sibling’s potential dates” to Mera. She’s gonna “vet” those people to decide if they’re worthy and hopefully they’ll live.

Sophia’s relationship with Kyouya is strongly “I’m the only one allowed to bully him” which is just sibling energy 101. She constantly taunts him in any way that proves she’s stronger but if someone else did that to him she would call pathetic and beneath him. Just, if you have a sibling would know this behavior very well. I do think Sophia gives off youngest (and problem child) vibes as always starting shit and needing the most attention from their parents. Where as Kyouya gives of more of a middle child (has severe issues) vibe, where he’s calmer and practiced at not responding to the younger one starting shit (which honestly only pisses them off more). He also did have a ton of siblings as a goblin (that he babysat a lot) so he’s just very practiced.

I know the Puppet Taratect’s as actually Ariel’s (and by extension Shiro’s) children but is it horrible of me to say they give off more pet vibes. Pets are still kids and you can be a pet Mom. I own cats and I LOVE cats, they have that strong energy. Just the fact that they don’t really need to be parented/taught/guidance but do need someone watching them to make sure they don’t get into things they shouldn’t. And the fact that anyone in their group can do it it’s not really something that needs a particular experience/angle. listen I think most discourse about this chenford fight is going to be pointless in the end because of how short-lived we all know it’s going to be so I don’t want to engage with it too much but I will say my only criticism is that I do feel lucy was made to be a bit overly hysterical. I don’t think that’s tim’s fault though, nor is it hers, because it’s a valid response to the big stress she’s going through right now. but also worth noting is that she did ask for tim to ride with her and to test her today. she did that knowing what tutor/teacher tim is like and she did that wanting to prove herself. maybe tim should have known when to step in or else the scene wouldn’t have been compromised and a real case wouldn’t have been jeopardized but I don’t think he could have dealt with lucy’s emotions and supported her any better.

as someone who is very much like lucy in that I get irrationally snippy when I’m flustered, under stress, feeling insecure, and doubting myself (mine and lucy’s 4 main moods I guess lol) I know that often nothing can be said in those moments that will make me see sense and feel calmer or more confident. external support can only go so far when you’re not practicing proper emotional regulation. that’s something everyone can work on and it’s not something lucy did wrong it just means she hadn’t grounded herself yet. also, tim knows her so so well but obviously he can’t always know the perfect thing to say to make her feel better. they may have known each other for years but their romantic relationship is still very new so he’s going to mess up and be imperfect. these are still new waters they’re navigating and I do lean more towards tim’s side with this one but I have empathy for lucy right now more than ever, because obviously it sucks to be teased at work for making a mistake. NOT COOL GUYS!

but yeah, those are my thoughts basically. I don’t think this little fight was ever meant to be that deep, rather just setting the foundations for potentially deeper angst with her being in danger during undercover ops so I really don’t want to make my thoughts needlessly profound here but I think it’s important to just be like “… yeah. that was a fight that they went through as a couple and it wasn’t pretty but it was fairly blameless and normal. it is what it is, now let’s move on and save energy for the bigger problems coming up in the season” because it’ll just weigh on me too much if I don’t let myself let it go lol

This Zodiac Sign is determined, visionary and make great decisions which only allow for more progress in life - not just practically but emotionally too. Capricorn is reliable and steady, a great friend to go to when you need an honest opinion. Whilst this placement may tend to come across as biased sometimes or judgemental it's because they tend to hold high standards for themselves and the people around them. However, this doesn't mean they do this to bring others down, they do this to help aid others and give them some kind of direction in life. A Capricorn already intuitively knows who they are and their goals, often thriving in competitive subjects and can become highly skilled in multiple different topics (although this doesn't mean they are organised at all). They may like to keep their environment clean as well as their mindset, easily being able to say goodbye to toxic situations.

Unpopular opinion perhaps but idt Circe and Rex are a good couple and hear me out. This is not Circe hate I fucking love Circe. She's my girlie. I will jokingly call her Rex's goth gf but like...their dynamic is kinda not great.

Starting with Rex he is extremely codependent with people. Not in an only bad way - he just wants to solve people's problems bc that's what he's used to based on his circumstances. He's the Cure, the specialest guy in his world and everyone knows it even as he doesn't want to be. But he is so used to not just being reliable, but relying on others if he thinks he can't handle something - which isn't often bc he's 15-17 and forced into a hero complex, but it happens. He's used to Six and Holiday saving his ass and having to work with other people. He's also very people-oriented, craving deep connections and willing to open up to anyone.

And in contrast, we have Circe. She is clearly very independent, likes solving issues on her own and hates swallowing her pride, which is fine bc she's ALSO 15-17 and traumatized and manipulated by VK a lot. VK outright said she was in a terrible place when he found her and I don't doubt it, bc that's his MO, playing off of people's desperation. She was a manipulated, discriminated against and traumatized teenager who I want to make abdolutely clear I do not blame for her actions. Girlie clearly has a lot to work through.

But ultimately, I think this makes Circe and Rex a bad romantic couple. Their romantic moments read to me more like kids with no experience dating rather than a deep connection. When they fight, it's always really, really bad, and usually Rex is feeling the brunt of the argument - which again, is not a dunk on Circe. Rex has had emotional support for as long as he can remember with Holix, while it's clear while VK was around the Pack did Not get along. But it's just...shitty for him. He has to consistently be the bigger person which, if he was another character with another backstory willingly and consistently engaging with her it wouldn't be that bad. Noah, for example, could probably handle it better than Rex and be able to better communicate that hey, this isn't fair to lash out at him and that's something to work on. (Again, not a dunk on Circe - people can have negative traits that are not their fault that they still need to rectify to be fair for others. Also, it just flat-out makes her a more interesting character.)

But Rex? Rex is the hero. He's the savior, because that's all he remembers. He's the guy who has to show empathy, has to give other EVOs that aren't blatantly evil second chances, because he's used to no one else doing it. So to me, it just...makes for a bad dynamic for both of them. Rex takes too much shit from Circe bc he wants to help her, and then oversteps her boundaries with what she wants to deal with alone and upsets her more. Circe feels like she's being pitied or talked down to by Rex, and then she either lashes out or gets cold.

I think, honestly, that if they weren't traumabonded...they wouldn't even be that close. Their personalities don't mesh - they could be good friends, but surface level friends. People who talk about their interests or only hang out in friend groups, and that would be fine. But in a romantic relationship, it just...doesn't work.

For those who picked this pile, it seems like you have a quite unfair perception of yourself. You see yourself as what you are not (yet), and define your value based on your flaws. As it goes, you could have a low self-esteem, and think your mere existence could drag other down like a burden or liability. Or, you could also be an over-achiever, who set the bar unrealistically high and won't give yourself the satisfaction unless other people give it to you first. You could also identify as the wallflower or the blacksheep in your community, who could disappear and no one would notice. On the contrary, others seem to see you as someone they could rely on. They can trust you to give them emotional comfort, as well as to give them helping hand in practical matter like, taking care of them when they're blackout drunk haha. Anyhow, they see you as someone with a big heart and has a lot to give without calculation. Hater would say you're too kind, but it's their problem for not being able to handle honest affection. What I can see clearly, there is a gap between the public you and the private you. You tend to try to give to other people all the while your own cup is empty, and that couldn't be healthy in the long run. For the record, this could be due to you associate the quality of being helpful as your worth. Know that your loved one would love to be your confidant to you as you are to them. Also you could use some more of "sorry, I'm not available" and focus your energy to replenish and work on your own projects.

This pile really radiates such a joyful energy 😄 To others, you embodies the bigger than life spirit, or someone who is living their dream. Hello i am the anon from earlier, thank you for the troubel you gone through to help me. So there are four things structure wise that i strugel with.

The first one is an issue of paceing. The first five chapters of my book are fast paced but after that there is a rapid slow and i am afraid its not going to work. Its not unintentional on my part, the pov character is rushing to find something and he is forced to slow down and i want the redear to feel how he feels but i am afraid I am playing it too harsh. Do you know any way i could make this more enjoyabel? Come to think of it chapter six is the turning point of the plot in two otherways and i am having troubel with all of it.

Secondly its also a turn in how the story is structured. Before that, there is some emotional and character relation focused moments but mainly just to explain why the pov acts the way he does and then the description of said foolish actions, in short the plot is action driven. But after that he is forced to sit and examine his actions (and draw the incorrect conclusion why he did it, naturaly) and get to know the people he found himself souronded with and convince them to help him and his two friends instead of doing their own thing. The plot focus gets shifted onto character relations both internal in the POV figuring himself out as the story goes on and the two to each other completely unknown factions getting to know eachother both at cultural level and concrete characters developing bonds. I have plot points figured out but i can't make the shift work, and i can't string it together afterwards. Action and external conflict fueled plots are a lot easier to find resources for.

The tird probleme piece is the second PoV character, who is the other MC and is the leader of the other, and bigger factiona. Her PoV is esential for all this to work out. Her first chapter is the sixst one. She is deifeid in story and it makes her rather detached from everyone. she has troubel understanding and expresing herself because of it. As the story goes on and the two MCs get to know eachother she becomes a lot less criptic and distant and a lot more human. I had the idea that as this happens i would give her more and more POV chapters until its even and we are switching back and forth between her and the the male MC. This seemed like a good idea but i am having a hard time implementing it. Is it even viabel or should i just kill my darling and give her as much PoV chapters as i need her to have. Do you know a way i could balance these two ideas.

The fourth issue is chapter six itself. Because for all the weight it's pulling it's anemic. Its the female MC discussing with her advisors what to do with the strangers, how to treat them how to help them, the second half is just her having an existential crisis and the reader getting a peak at what her internal world is like, and how she thinks so they understand why she acts the way she does later. Problem with this is that the most obvious tension and hook for the male MCs next chapter is him getting to know what is going to happen to them. I either pull the readers leg and dont give them a solid answer in the entirity of chapter six or i slaughter the tension and start to build it up again. Worse thing is, the answer itself is pretty inconclusive, female MC wants to wait and see what kind of people she is dealing with befor burning time and resources on helping their goal but its clear to him that she is not heartless enough to kick them to the curb with no help to survive. So not a lot of risk either. It absolutely doesn't have enough meat on its bones to be cut up in two. I need the argument with the advisors to introduce them because they are important characters and its the best way to introduce them, but it seems like this is just doing more harm than good. What should i do with this?

The first five chapters of my book are fast paced but after that there is a rapid slow. Do you know any way i could make this more enjoyable?

An important thing to remember about pacing is that you can use faster, more frantic episodes, and slower, more contemplative episodes to contrast one another, and heighten the impact of each.

If a whole book is just endless frantic rushing from one thing to the next, it gets tiring—not just for the characters, but for the readers—you often benefit from some ‘down time’ to let everyone regroup and recover, and prepare for the next action sequence.

Ways to emphasise this may be to show your characters who have been doing a lot of rushing and action, now in recovery phase: do they have wounds that need tending to, do they need to have a few solid meals to rebuild themselves, do they need to sleep for twelve hours solid, and so on.

As well, your protagonist’s mental stamina may well be flagging at this point, if he hasn’t had any opportunity to sit and rest and think about what is happening, he may be running on fumes, and simply doing whatever seems to need doing next out of sheer exhaustion (you mention that he’s been making some poor decisions, and if he’s been stuck in high action mode for five chapters without a break, a part of that might be just exhaustion!)

Have you ever gotten home after a big day, thinking ‘ok, now that’s done, I will go and do those chores I’ve been putting off…’ and then you sit down and zone out entirely until suddenly it’s dark and you’re hungry and when did you even fall asleep??—well imagine that process happening while you’re also trying to negotiate an alliance with a bigger faction than yours.

I think that you have the elements here for your ‘down time’ and ‘slow chapters’ to be fine and good additions to your story—but here’s the thing:

You have to stop thinking of quiet and slow parts of stories as ‘boring’ or ‘nothing happening’

It might help you to re-consider about what you’re writing in the quiet scenes, and think of the human relationships and interpersonal conflicts as though they were action scenes. When you think about a conversation, imagine the dynamic of a fight scene, these people are using words instead of fists, but they’re functionally doing the same thing. It is possible to write conversations that are just as engaging as any action scene.

Also, it’s probably a good time to mention, because I think that this is sometimes an issue that writers have when thinking about their own works: the reader wants to get invested in your characters. The reader will probably enjoy all the high action and drama, but they want to get to know your characters, and how they think and why they do the things they do, so that when all that action is happening, they have someone to be cheering for (or commiserating with!)

Quiet, introspective, and character driven scenes aren’t boring because they aren’t action scenes, in fact it is arguable that these are the scenes that make action scenes have any relevance at all! Why should I care that the guys in the giant mechas are beating each other up, if I don’t know them?

Problems two and three: I will combine them

Now, I may be wrong, so feel free to ignore this if it isn’t helpful to you, but it seems to me that the ‘problems’ you have here are actually just the structure of the story showing in a way that you weren’t expecting.

From what you’ve described, I understand that the first POV character’s character arc is one where he goes from being someone who is very high in action and low in introspection, to having to do more introspection in order to grow and develop as a person and a leader.

The second POV character’s arc sounds like she’s going from being someone who is extremely introspective and withdrawn to the point of almost inaction, (aside from intellectualised action, like discussing things with advisors and issuing orders), who’s so internalised that she has trouble even communicating with people outside of her own head, and who has to learn to be more spontaneous and take action.

Essentially, it seems to me that these two characters are travelling in opposite directions, to meet somewhere in the middle, where each of them gains a little of the other’s strengths.

In this light, what you’ve descibed sounds like it makes perfect sense to me structurally:

->We start with six action-heavy chapters where the protagonist’s lack of introspection leads to foolish mistakes.

->We meet a new POV chaacter who is withdrawn, separated from her people, and has a lot of weight resting on her shoulders.

->Over time, as they interact, and over the course of the story, each one starts to learn from the other (I’m assuming here that they’ll be spending a decent amount of time interacting), and at the end each of them has been able to take on some of the other’s positive traits in ways that help them with the problems they were having earlier.

Now, leaving it six chapters to introduce your second POV character may or may not be too long, but it depends entirely on how long the book is and what kind of story it is. If it’s a big fat fantasy or scifi brick, then six chapters is nothing! If it’s a pacy little 80k contemporary novel, then six chapters might be pushing it, but you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do.

I think that your idea of having the female MC’s chapters be sporadic at first and then become more frequent as the book progresses can be a very effective way of showing the development of both characters. You haven’t mentioned whether you’ve outlined your story in any detail, so if you haven’t, I would suggest doing a proper outline so that you can see exactly what information needs to be included where, and you can organise your chapters so that eveything flows toward the outcome you want.

Issue the fourth: Chapter six is anaemic

I have to ask, but is it really? Or is it just that you’re overly familiar with this chapter, and you’re comparing it unfavourably to the more action packed chapters?

You’ve got a lot going on here, meetings with advisors, a big decision regarding the smaller faction, the female MC’s internal conflict, etc. there’s a lot going on here, and you can slow down and take your time with it, as I said earlier, it might be helpful for you to think of, for example, the discussion with the advisors as an action sequence.

There are a number of people around a table, each of them has their own agenda, each of them has their own secrets, and personal desires, as well as various conflicts and relationships with the other people at that table. They have to engage in conversation to try and get as much of their own agenda fulfilled, while trying to sabotage their rivals and enemies goals. All of this through words. Of course, there might be some physical intimidation, or raised voices, etc, but the main arena is the arena of ideas.

Now, as to the conundrum with whether or not the reader, and/ or the male MC should find out about what the female MC’s decided to do, it isn’t at all unreasonable to let that question go unanswered in the sixth chapter. As I said in the paragraph above, there’s going to be all kinds of undercurrents and political interplay among the advisors, and it would be totally understandable for the female MC to leave the meeting with ‘I’m going to think about it, I’ll let you all know my decision tomorrow,” or whatever she would say—especially if her actual decision is something like “I need to wait and see what they’re like before I make a decision”. In her position, keeping her decision to herself until she knows for sure who and what she's dealing with is smart, and it's a power move. Everyone else is waiting on her decision!

And following from that, I would gently suggest that the strongest tension in the following chapter comes not from the male MC getting a solid answer, but from him having to sit with not having an answer yet. This would be another chance for him to practice introspection, or alternatively, for him to do something impulsive and foolish, which provides another example to him of why a little more intospection might be helpful for him.

Don’t feel like you need to provide answers for everything right away, you can let the reader sit with the tension, and even explore possibilities before locking things down.

You’ve said that it’s “clear to him that she is not heartless enough to kick them to the curb with no help to survive” but that’s a total gamble! It is extremely reckless to base his, and his faction’s success or survival on the belief that the leader of another faction is soft hearted enough to help them, without a clear way that this would be helpful for the bigger faction!

To say again: I don’t think you realise quite how much there is going on in Chapter Six!!

You have descibed a lot of complicated moving parts, here, and I think that mapping out the politics and the interpersonal conflicts among this cast of characters (advisors, faction members, etc) so that you can draw upon and refer to that web of interactions is going to help bring this chapter to life for you.

Some reading suggestions:

I think it would be worthwhile for you to try reading some fiction that has a combination of high and low action sequences, where each is as heavily weighted with importance and plot relevance as the other. Some of these are more difficult reads than others, and I know you’ve said that English is your second language, but you seem to write pretty well, so I think you should be able to handle these.

To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers

This is a scifi novella about exploring alien planets, where most of the action is very peaceful, rather than conflict-based, but it is pretty exciting, wandering through vast cosmic distances, and going to hugely diverse alien worlds. It is also a profoundly quiet, and introspective novella about human nature and the passage of time.

Dune by Frank Herbert

This is a scifi classic for a reason! This book has plenty of fights and action sequences, but it is also a book which very literally turns internal thoughts and conversations into action sequences. The human conflicts are also placed against a backdrop of ecological writing which contextualises all of the action.

The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien

Another classic, this one doesn’t make use of a whole lot of internal thoughts, but it does do a lot of landscape mood setting. Vast stetches of descriptions of fields and trees and forests, interrupted now and then by a life-and-death flight from a wraith. Once you get into the right frame of mind, the rhythm of the descriptions and the action really bring the ‘epic’ into Epic Fantasy

A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine

This is a Space Opera which has its fair share of assasination attempts, and chases, but the most part of the book is concerned with linguistics, and politics, and that does not make it any less tense to read.

In summary:

I understand that you’re not feeling confident about your story, and the decisions you’ve made about it. But to me it sounds like you’ve got some perfectly good ideas, and you’re just a bit uncertain about how to execute them. That’s ok!

The thing is, that if you write a first draft, and the stuff that you’re trying to do doesn’t work out, nothing bad happens! I promise!

In fact, something great happens: You then have a whole first draft to start fixing!

It can be difficult, when you’re only partway through a story, to see how what you’ve written is going to fit in with the rest of the story. What you have right now feels huge! It’s everything of the book that exists so far! It really overpowers the rest of the book (which hasn’t been written yet)

Of course it does. But when you’ve written the rest of the book and the stuff you have so far is put into context, everything will feel a lot more balanced. And if it doesn’t? That’s what editing is for!

Make sure that you’ve got a decent working outline to refer back to, and just write the story!

Summary:

This series takes place after the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Serufu and her childhood friend Miku/“Purin” both applied to an elite school, where advanced technologies are incorporated into the curriculum. The tech-savvy Purin is accepted into the school, but accident-prone Serufu is rejected and enters a traditional school instead, driving a wedge into their friendship.

On her way to class one day, Serufu encounters Rei, who has a passion for old-fashioned crafts and is the head of the school’s Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Club—which is in danger of closing due to a lack of members. Realizing that this may be her chance to repair her relationship with Purin, Serufu joins the club in hopes of creating projects that could bring them together once more.

Propaganda:

It’s just a really feel-good series with some great characters. I adore all of them and their dynamics with each other, especially the main dynamic between Serufu and Purin as it develops. I’m a really big fan of the show’s angle on stuff such as do-it-yourself crafts following another industrial revolution, just because it does frequently bring up the question of “What’s the point of DIY if in a year or two/maybe even now a robot could recreate the exact same result?” through characters like Purin (who is the major character with the lowest opinion on these kinds of crafts at the start, since she’s in the technologically advanced school and has beliefs more in line with the efficacy of technology rather than the joy of human creation), with the short answer largely being because it’s just fun!

I first watched this show before I saw a lot of AI stuff intruding upon art and rewatching it after sure was fun, because I love its ideas on the worth of doing stuff that machinery could do much faster. It’s not super complex or emotional, but that largely goes in its favor, because it really doesn’t need to be those. It’s just a fun little anime about a bunch of girls having fun together through one shared hobby that some of them had from the start and some of them adopted. I also love the opening, and the ending is a massive comfort song for me. The series can also be very funny at points, and is usually super heartwarming.

#A3: RIN-NE (Kyoukai no Rinne)

Summary:

Rinne Rokudou has bigger problems than going to school—namely, helping spirits pass over to the next life. Because of this responsibility, he often finds himself short on money and struggles to buy his necessities: food, clothes, and exorcism tools.

Sakura Mamiya has been able to see ghosts since she was little. She hoped she would outgrow it, but even after starting high school, nothing has changed. To make matters worse, the first time her ever-absent classmate, Rinne, shows up for school, only Sakura can see him. She assumes, as anyone would, that he is a ghost. However, to Sakura's surprise, Rinne proceeds to attend school like normal the next day.

Propaganda:

This is one of Rumiko Takahashi’s underrated works (mostly getting overshadowed by Inuyasha due to her releasing this series after the fact), and I don’t see a lot of people talk about it often. While it’s not my favorite of her works, it’s one that I still like because of the way she portrays the characters. Plus, it still has that classic Rumic comedy and feel to it and I really love the animation with her artstyle. Anyways, if you like supernatural comedies (with a hint of romance) then vote for Rin-ne!

Chapter 5 part 2

I don't like how close Jaden is , it feels like there's no depth in the car and that Jaden is right behind her wich clutter the panel and make it less breathable , despite that having parnyia trying to cheer up Jaden and having a small laugh out of her is pretty cute , perhaps I would've given parniya a more surprised expression but if rusty tries to make out of her a more cold/reserved character it's a good idea !

I'm not a fan of the execution of this panel , I see the vision rusty had about it but there's a lack of transition, having having parniya and shez look at each other's first then having the only smiles cases could've been pretty good but here there's no transition and it feels very rough .

Tho I do like very much the expression rusty gave to Jaden, it's very in style and make it feel so good to finally see a character have an expression other than crying or faint expressions !!

Wow rusty did really improve trough that chapter because here we see really clearly more expressions , they could be more exaggerated but they're already feel better than how it was before

I like how shez give them space to bond over that experience while driving, she sees parniya opening to someone new and it visibly makes her proud/happy

For the first case I don't like the out of the car perspective of shez , it drags us out of the emotion of the moment and it's really hard to then go back into it plus it feels out of space , I feel like rusty tried to experiment too much with the point of views and forgot how the public may perceive it . Because yes it's great rusty has an inner circle of friends but she give them information that cannot be found publicly or in comic . So obviously the information we can properly critique is limited when so much content is out of reach . Wich is an issue I'll talk more in depth

I like the out of case depth !! It's very interesting and doesn't make it boring and we know where Jaden is so it's really easy to understand

I'm not sure what's the line on jadens neck , I think it's just a neck line but I'd recommend making it more faint so it doesn't look weird

I'm not sure what the event is I checked online but I don't think it's an irl one

OK I'm kinda starting to dig parniya semi expression less faces , it's interesting to only have 1 character have this much of a lack of expressions . And I'm very happy to see rusty kept doing big expressions afterwards , it helps making the comic feel more worked on and that it truly teached her stuff .

She still has to work on making her text more expressive but it's coming along !

Oh no...it's an amazing panel honestly the only issue is how the text is still so expressionless , I'd really like to see more about them through the texts because it's such an important way to convey how the characters feel and are !!!

I'm not sure showing the time is relevant since no one is commenting on it and we don't have an exact time as when the event of the last chapter happened during the night . Unless rusty really wanted to show chronology for this chapter it's a bit too late

Still very expressionless text and bubbles unfortunately and Jaden is way too close , it looks as if she's right behind shez she should've made Jaden a bit smaller to really show the depth there is

I like how we see shez giggle a little it's a really nice detail !!

And I really enjoy how subtle yet telling that panel is , the expressions rusty gave parniya and Jaden are amazing I really like that subtle character building we are seeing.

I really like the texture of that panel !! It seems that when rusty focus on something smaller it's easier for her to take her time rather than bigger stuff , wich is something she's gonna have to work on but we saw in that chapter that when she identify the problem she can work on it with ease

Oh yes I'm really digging parniya character fr and I like how rusty takes the time to really build the comic around Adelaide in Australia and make sure she doesn't make it ambiguous by sharing more slangs and short stories about her time there (in thr description of the panel she explain where the name of the road comes from)

The silly little heads are also very cute I hope it wasn't a 1 time thing and that it will keep happening trough the comic

Fr it's impressive the huge improvement rusty did trough that chapter ! We see very well their emotions and it was very needed at this point and I'm enjoying it thoroughly!

I like the small action of Jaden unbuckling her belt , it's really great to make the scenes more alive than stiff like they can be sometimes.

I also really like the foreshadowing of a potential housewarming party ! It's really nice to have a plot that will (?( potentially happen

I feel like rusty had a lot of fun with that chapter and it's showing!! All the small details are nicely done up to Jaden tattoo ok her wrist

And I like that we learn that parniya is a fan of gossip and like to know about people drama , that behind that stone girl facade she's truly just a silly gossip lover !

Hahahaha it's adorable how Jaden is honestly, it's good to see her be more than we previously saw , we see how much of a people pleaser she is here and how much she'd rather find compromise than let someone down . She's taking the situation gently and is talking about it with them to find a solution nor politely decline

I also love how the murmuring panel is depicted !! It's a really sweet depiction of someone whispering

i'm Thinking Again and i really think SNW needs to Do Something Different with spock's character arc instead of just trying to retread old ground.

we already know spock has a hard time dealing with his mixed-race identity and how he tries to be As Logically Vulcan As Possible even though other vulcans see him as inherently less logical because of his human heritage. and being ashamed of himself for his own humanity and emotional responses and such. we've already seen him slowly work through that in TOS and the movies and that he eventually does come to a place where he's comfortable with who he is and comfortable acting emotionally as well as logically.

the tension between emotion and logic is a key part of what makes spock as a character so compelling so i get that part of it is always gonna be there. but the way SNW does it is so reductive and surface level that it's just boring. first of all, its so stupid to tie a deeply complex personal issue like that to a love triangle. it feels like its just "do i need to be more like a human (for christine) or more like a vulcan (for t'pring)" and the whole thing is approached in a really bioessentialist way. treating the vulcan logic thing as an irrefutable result of their biology rather than a learned cultural practice. there's also no real tension to it?? because we already know that it takes YEARS for spock to resolve his inner conflict (and that he doesn't end up with either of the people in the love triangle lol). so it just feels like build up that never goes anywhere.

it's interesting to me that this seems to be a uniquely SNW problem, because AOS and Discovery both did something different with spock's character within the context of his long term identity issues.

AOS takes place in an alternate timeline, so it's literally Not The Same Spock and there's aspects of his character that are completely different. the flashback scenes in star trek 2009 definitely seem to follow the same arc as TOS spock, but there's Way More than that going on. i mean, in AOS, vulcan gets destroyed and spock ends up watching his mother fucking die. that's an extra layer of trauma right there and it's arguably a bigger part of his character than his identity issues. and another big difference is that AOS spock is dating uhura and was initially super hostile towards kirk, so that kinda shakes up the dynamics between him and the rest of the crew a little. old TOS spock also encourages AOS spock to consider looking beyond logic and going by what he feels, so AOS spock seems a bit more at ease with that part of himself.

when AOS did go into the logic/emotion/identity plotline, it was usually done through the idea of duty and divided loyalties. the big one that comes to mind is in star trek beyond. logically, it seems best for him to drop out of starfleet and help work to rebuild vulcan culture instead, but emotionally he wants to stay where he is. there's also the intro scene in into darkness where he's insisting that the others leave him to die (based on his sense of duty to starfleet regulations) while internally being terrified of y'know. dying in a fuckin volcano. and how that whole mindset kinda flips when kirk dies and spock has a complete breakdown, despite knowing that what kirk did was logically the best choice for the sake of the ship. basically being caught between his professional/cultural duty and his friendship for the enterprise crew.

discovery is a bit different, because now we're getting the same spock as TOS, but younger. what's interesting to me about this iteration of trek is that the conflict between logic and emotion is playing out around spock through his family. when we first see disco spock, he's completely incoherent and delusional after mind melding with the red angel and getting his brain fried by the experience of nonlinear time. you know, shit that happens in star trek. as his condition gets worse and worse, amanda and sarek have opposing ideas about how to help him, with amanda having the more emotion-based approach and sarek having the logical approach. in the end, neither of them are right and it's michael, who is also kinda caught between human and vulcan cultures, who is able to help spock.

aside from his complicated family situation, discovery shows spock wrestling with his identity from a totally different angle. he's furious with himself because he can't make sense of the red angel situation logically or emotionally. basically, he feels like he's failed BOTH parts of his heritage, which is different from TOS, where he was mostly just trying to be the ideal vulcan and looking disdainfully at his humanity. michael points this out when the two of them are fighting and spock yells back "RIGHT NOW I FEEL THAT FAILURE IS LIBERATING!" which is a really fucking interesting statement that i never see people bringing up. in a way, it's like spock feels that failure has given him permission to reject human/vulcan cultural expectations and live more in the in-between spaces, even if it takes him a long time to fully embrace that.

the other big thing from discovery is that it adds new things that enhance spock's arc from TOS. for instance, spock's dyslexia adds a whole other layer to his ongoing identity issues. not only is he an outcast for being half human, but he's also got a learning disability in a society that values academic achievement so highly. there's also michael's final bit of advice and how TOS shows that spock really took it to heart. so like, disco shows spock moving towards who he will eventually become in TOS, even if he's not quite there yet. i guess you could argue that SNW spock's relationships with christine and t'pring are doing something similar in terms of adding to TOS canon? but imo in that case its more like, underscoring things that were already present in TOS instead of really trying something new. and none of it really moves spock towards where he is in TOS. so spock in SNW feels almost like a regression rather than building off what happened to him in discovery and moving forward.

ANYWAY ive gone on for way too fuckin long so what im trying to say is there are clearly ways to work within spock's ongoing character arc without just doing the same thing as TOS. and since SNW isn't trying new things, its portrayal of spock really falls flat.
